When Lily got home she found Dahlia sitting at the table in the farmhouse kitchen. Her eyes were red-rimmed and she was blowing her nose into a tattered tissue. Lily hadn’t ever seen her aunt crying like this before and she could only guess that Dahlia had somehow found out about the proposed boycott. Lily rushed to her side.

“What’s wrong?”

“He’s gone and he’s not coming back,” she wailed.

For a moment, Lily thought Dahlia was referring to Kyle, which didn’t make any sense. Her next thought was that Dahlia was referring to Lars or Martin; she’d meant that one of them had died and she couldn’t bring herself to say the words.

“Who isn’t coming back?” When Dahlia didn’t answer, Lily panicked and asked the question louder, “Who isn’t coming back?”

“Aiden.”

Relieved, Lily sank into a chair. “He’s threatened to leave before, but he never did, so maybe he’s just saying that again because he’s angry or something.”

“No, this time he meant it. He’s really gone.” Dahlia cried harder, her shoulders shaking. “I accepted a long time ago that he’d leave once he turned eighteen, but we had an agreement. He promised he’d finish school first. Now he’s going to miss his final exams and he won’t graduate. I don’t get it. He was doing so much better here than in Jersey. But now he’s going to throw away two years of hard work just to spite me.”

Lily was taken aback to hear Dahlia openly admit how frustrated she’d been with her son. Usually, she didn’t say a single word to anyone about Aiden’s behavior, no matter how obnoxious it was. What was even more astonishing was that Dahlia indicated her son was doing better in Hope Haven. If this is the new and improved Aiden, I’d hate to meet the New Jersey Aiden, she silently mused as she patted her aunt’s hand.

“I’m sorry you’re so upset, Dahlia. But I really don’t think Aiden left for good. I mean, he probably doesn’t have much money, right? I bet he’ll be back as soon as he runs out of cash.”

Dahlia didn’t look convinced. She pushed her chair away from the table and rose to her feet. “I need to be alone for a while. Can you make supper tonight? There’s steak in the fridge.”

“Sure. Do you want me to bring a plate to your room when it’s ready?”

“No, thanks. I’m going out.”

Maybe it was because Dahlia rarely left the farm in the evening by herself, but for the next several hours, Lily had the dreadful feeling that her aunt had fled the island for good, too, just like Aiden. Even after she heard Dahlia’s car rolling up the driveway a little past nine o’clock, Lily couldn’t shake the sense of foreboding.

Why do I feel like this? Dahlia might be upset, but she’s going to be okay, she tried to reassure herself. Eventually, the gossip about the fire will die down and the petition for the boycott won’t get enough signatures. People will move on to talking something else—they always do.
